Are you Still Making Excuses When it Comes to Your Exercise Routine?

If you have ever begun an exercise routine, chances are that you have found a myriad of excuses threatening to side-track your efforts.
Maybe you have discovered the secret to overcoming your excuses and, if so, congratulations on your success! But if the excuses won out and you have stopped exercising, or you still battle the day-to-day excuses while trudging through your exercise program, let me offer some solutions to getting and staying on track.
Excuse #1: “I am too busy to exercise.â€
The conventional answer to this would be “just do itâ€- find the time. While this sounds sensible, a deeper look into this excuse is needed.
Where do you spend your time, or in another sense, what do you put your energy towards?
Experience tells me that people make time for what is most important to them, because you have only so much energy you can expend before you get too tired and start to wilt.
You will spend this vital energy on what is most important to you and needs your attention…your priorities.
So what starts out as an issue of time is really an issue of energy expenditure.
It is helpful to put your attention on the value you place on your priorities and ask yourself, “How is this serving me?â€
Taking a larger view, I encourage you to make a list of your life’s top five values, for example family, health, community, etc. Once you have made this list, look to see where you are spending your time and energy in ways that may not be serving you to your fullest potential.
Your next best step is to weed out what is not serving you and simplify what is, therefore creating time and energy for exercise to assist you in enjoying what you spend your time on.
Excuse #2: “I hate to exercise.â€
If you truly do not enjoy exercise, I understand the struggle you might have in keeping consistent with your program.
But as in excuse #1, turning your focus to your values and the benefits you want from exercise can help you overcome this issue. Think about other things, such as changing a baby’s diaper, washing dishes, or taking the car in for an oil change. Essentially, these chores get done because you do not like the alternative and you do like the outcome.
While you may never love to exercise, unconventional thinking can increase the enjoyment factor.
Exercise does not have to take place in a gym or on a piece of equipment, nor do you have to push yourself to exhaustion running around a track. Find activities that are the “lesser of all the exercise evils.â€Â This way you will be more motivated to follow through.
I could go on and on with a list of excuses, but I’m sure you know them all!
The reality is, if you think that losing weight is all about overcoming an objection to an exercise routine or a diet, you’ve got a lot to learn – because there is SO much more to it than that!

You are so right about all these excuses that people use. The truth is, if we don’t take care of ourselves, no one else will. Thanks for your post

We have excuses for everything, but I think it comes down to motivation. If I am motivated to do something, there is no chance I’ll let a couple of excuses get in my way.

The first time I do my routine, yes, I always make excuses. But I guess if we are really willing to make our body in shape we should stop making excuses and I just did. I realize that it will not help me to gain the body I want. Thanks for reminding me about these “excuses” thing.
