How many times have you woken up in the morning and find yourself saying, “I’ve got to start exercising again?”

Believe me you are not alone. How do I know?

For over seven years women of all ages and from all walks of life, ranging from entrepreneurs, corporate executives to housewives, have been coming to my fitness company fed up with not being able to lose the weight with dieting and exercise.

I’ve had the privilege to work closely with hundreds of these women, coaching them through a unique three-step mind, body and spirit process that creates a new body, new attitude and new habits within weeks. In fact, 85% of the women we coach keep their weight off.

So how does our coaching process work and why is it so successful for our clients? It’s pretty simple and you may be surprised that the most important piece of equipment in our work together isn’t an expensive workout machine but a phone.

A Woman’s Balancing Act

While I am constantly researching and looking at new ways to benefit my clients and expand my own knowledge on health, fitness, Intuitive Eating and overall wellness, don’t think I spend all my time with exercise, running a business and coaching.  I am also the mother of three children (ages 2, 6 & 8), wife of Tom, and manager of the household!

One thing that I quickly realized is that there is not enough time in the day to achieve all that I have in front of me. This is certainly true for the women we work with through our company. The simple reality is that on our road to achieving goals life intervenes and sometimes throws us off course. Of course, if you’ve ever found yourself highly motivated to start an exercise program only to find yourself unmotivated a few months or even a few weeks later, after you took a break due to illness, family matters or work, you know what I’m talking about.

This is when you need to have a solid Plan B. You know, the alternative to your original Plan A, after it falls through. As a quick side note, this is what mothers commonly refer to as, “The Babysitter Syndrome”. It’s when you are all ready to go out and the babysitter hasn’t shown up or called. What do you do and who do you call?

A Phone + Commitment = Healthy Results

Well, speaking of calling, it was through my experience, education and extensive study of the research available regarding motivation (or the lack of it), and along with Susan Vezina, President of The Association of Phone Fitness Coaches®, that I developed a new telephone based fitness & motivational program.

I know what you’re probably thinking, fitness and a phone – what in the world could these two possibly have in common?

The phone not only eliminates distance, providing a direct link to your personal trainer and coach, no matter where you are, but studies by renowned research institutions, such as the Stanford Research Institute show a 75% to 90% adherence rate for following exercise programs by men and women who utilize fitness phone-coaching as a means to get and stay in shape.

These statistics reinforced what I was personally seeing happen to many of our clients and what originally drew them to us in the first place. This is especially true for women over the age of 40.

Accountability – Versatility – Affordability  

Cynthia M. Castro, Ph.D., a leading research associate at the Stanford University School of Medicine stated in the article she co-authored with Abby King, Ph.D.,Telephone-Assisted Counseling for Physical Activity, by Abby King, Ph.D. and Cynthia Castro, Ph.D.,

“Research on telephone-assisted counseling for physical activity has established a convincing body of evidence supporting its effectiveness in promoting long-term physical activity change in adult populations.”

Underscoring our coaching process are three key items. These items are below.

1. Accountability. This is one of the most often overlooked keys to achieving long term fitness and weight loss goals. Our coaching process specifically addresses accountability and ensures that the guesswork for realizing your desired outcome is removed.

In a recent study at Virginia Polytechnic University, researchers divided a group of people starting a walking program into two groups. Every week, each individual in one group got a phone call asking how their exercise program was coming along; the other group got no calls. At the end of 24 weeks, 45% of the individuals who got the phone calls were still walking compared to just 2% of those who received no calls.

These results show that weekly accountability by phone increased the likelihood of sticking to your exercise program by 2200%! 2. Versatility. Wouldn’t it be great to have the ability to exercise effectively anytime, anywhere, with as little or as much equipment as one chooses? Our coaching process over the phone not only allows you to do that but we place you in control of what you need to do to get the results you want, regardless of the diets or exercise programs you’ve been on before. 3. Affordability. Prior to phone fitness coaching, the closest most people could get to attaining these kind of dramatic results with exercise was to hire a personal trainer for each and every exercise session. Since it usually takes five days a week of exercise for significant fat loss, it could mean spending anywhere from $600 to $2,000 per month for a personal trainer (depending on their educational background and location.)
